The animals
When we talk about sees and oceans the first thing everyone
thinks of is fish. But also an innumerable number of invertebrates
live there. These are for instance the sponges, corals, sea
anemones, jellyfish, squids, larvae, crabs, shrimp, shellfish,
starfish, sea-urchins, sea squirts and many more. Especially the
coral reefs contain a wealth of these animals. Some are attached,
while others swim freely. The attached forms generally eat plankton
or occasionally catch a careless fish (sea anemone). The others
graze, live from waste or hunt. At Burgers' Zoo the species have to
be chosen in such a way that they can survive together. For this
use is made of their natural food reference: grazing animals like
sea-urchins, surgeonfish and hermit crabs keep the algae in check.
Waste eaters like crabs, certain fish like the bristle tooth
surgeon fish and for instance the sea cucumber must clean the sea
floor while scarlet cleaner shrimp and striped cleaner wrasses take
care of the skin of fish who need this.
