The ocean
Oceans are stable environments: temperatures and chemical
compositions hardly change. Although it concerns immeasurable
quantities of water, most inhabitants still live close to the
continental coastlines or islands. Here most of the food is found
and animals that grow onto something, like sea anemones, can easily
find solid ground. In the tropics, if the water is sufficiently
pure, coral can grow that can build entire reefs over the course of
millions of years. These reefs then become the living environment
of an incredible number of animal species. On the basis of their
biological wealth coral reefs are sometimes compared to tropical
rain forests. Burgers' Ocean shows both the rich animal life along
the coastline and on the reef as well as the surprises of the open
ocean and great depths. The visitor dives into South-East Asia and
gets to see a number of diverging living environments.
