FSC-covenant
Burgers' Zoo gladly supports the objectives of FSC to durably
manage forests and to prevent illegal deforestation. To this end an
agreement has been made with FSC that a minimum of 50% of all the
wood that will be used for the construction of the latest
developments at Burgers' Zoo will be FSC wood. These latest
developments include the construction of modern stables for all
ungulates of Burgers' Safari and the construction of foyers and
congress halls above these stables. No definite numbers are
available on this yet, but the first indication is that Burgers'
Zoo will more than meet this minimum.
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, a worldwide organisation
for the responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC is
an internationally operating, independent, not for profit
organisation, in which all involved are united with respect to
responsible forest management.
After all, forests are indispensable for man and animal: they are
the lungs of this earth. Still many forests are seriously
threatened and the FSC is trying to protect these forests worldwide
by, among others, stimulating responsible forestry, so we do not
have to attack these important nature reserves.
The FSC has designed a certification system in order to be able to
assess good forest management. This assessment is designed to
subject the entire chain of trade, from forest to end product, to
these principles and regulations. The FSC is supported in its work
by organisations like the World Wildlife Fund, Environmental
Defence, Greenpeace and Novib. Also many progressive companies in
the area of environmental awareness gladly participate in this. For
that reason Burgers' Zoo has entered into a covenant with
FSC.
